Normal: guy eats some shrimp. he gets a bad rash. its hard to breath. he gets extreme nausea and diareha. the doctor tells him he's allergic to shell fish - if he keeps eating shell fish the allergy will only get worse. in a year or two the reaction will be so bad it will kill him. the normal guy makes a decision to never eat shell fish for the rest of his life and does so.
