Snickers and Amdew: I agree that primary care physicians don't know everything. You definitely want and need to see a doctor who has a specialization in dealing with addictions, who would not prescribe those types of medication, except under extreme circumstances and only then while being closely monitored by them. I was self-medicating during my addiction for anxiety and after rehab when I came home, I started having these anxiety attacks that I was sure I would die from, a little melodramatic, but it was how it felt, lol. My primary care tried to help before I could get an appointment with the doctor I saw while I was in rehab, by prescribing an anti-anxiety medication, which was a good choice, but the medication didn't agree with me and I didn't sleep at all. Finally, I was prescribed something else by the doctor and while it doesn't work instantly, it was a better choice, where I did sleep and as the medication built up in my system, the anxiety issues have stopped. There are so many options out there for help with these issues, a specialist is the one to consult for help with it as opposed to a primary. I am thankful my primary has been involved in my care and has consulted with the specialist before prescribing meds for some other health issues. All doctors are not so conscientious and its easy to go from one addiction to another. Ambien says right in their commercials that it is addictive and xanax is a benze, so you know it's also addictive. Amdew, obviously you weren't totally confident in the ambien being an ideal choice, because you posted about it here, which was great, since you were listening to yourself on this one. It's funny how we know something isn't quite right and we throw it out there for another opinion or a second look. Good luck on this one, keep posting, and we'll keep helping each other here.
