Boyfriend pushing me away from his recovery

Unread postby colleeng72 » Tue Jan 29, 2013 11:11 am

I have been seeing someone for about a year, have known him for over 10 yrs. He was clean for years and three years ago he relasped. He has been sober on and off since. He recently had a relapse again last weekend and says that he needs to dive back in to AA and get his head straight and he needs space from me. I have always been there for him previously and never have been pushed away, it went from 100% of being in love and all was good to in a matter of a couple days, extreme distance. What do I do or what is the best way to support him, I'm afraid if I leave him alone and don't talk to him, he will think I'm not supportive, then I'm afraid if I ask too many questions, it will not be good. I would appreciate any advice.

Wow! how hard this must be for you! The most important thing is to stay close to Al anon and continually repeat and engage in conversations with others in Al anon about the first step. You are powerless over the alcoholic in your life and when he drinks your life is unmanageable. You know he may have gotten advice from someone in the program or he may have come to it on his own. I just came back from family rehab this weekend and I too am having to learn to distance myself from Chris's drinking. Concentrate on yourself and YOUR recovery. But ask him one simple question: "how would you like me in your life, and is there anything I can do right now to let you know I support you"?
You are gonna be fine.
