Change schools?

Unread postby Suzan » Sun Jun 07, 2009 1:18 pm

My stepson will be home from rehab in 2 weeks. He's been at a "IU" school that is full of addicts and former addicts, and that is his social circle. My husband wants to let him return, but I keep hearing that you need to get him away from old triggers.....anybody have experience either way? Thanks.

Hi Susan,

I have 2 sons that are addicts, my youngest son (now 21) has been in and out of rehabs for 6 years now, he also was arrested at the age of 15 and sent to placement in Erie, PA. It is a long difficult road between the recovery and the relapses. What I have come to realize is that you can only help them so much, only the addict knows what triggers the relapse. I have stood beside my son's and tried everything to help them, in the end though they have to be the one's to want the help. You didn't cause it, you can't control it, you can't cure it. You can give him direction, have him attend as many meetings as possible, maybe get a sponsor. He does need to stay away from all people, places & things that contribute to his addiction and surround himself with people that care about him. Hope this helps.
