Finally Admitting I cant Control it

I am looking for support to eliminate alcohol from my life.
Divorced father of 3. Frequent Drinker to the point where I only backout now when I drinkl
Cant stop once I start.
How do I start the process of recovery and getting my mind right? What happens at your first AA meeting? How do you get a sponsor who is willing to work with you?
Any feedback will be great!

Luckymon3: Hi and welcome! You can find a list of meetings on line here. Pick several near you that work in your schedule. As far as what happens, normally there is a somewhat set format. The chair introduces themself and goes through listing the who, what, where, when, why and how. Definitely absorb as much as you can, you'll learn so much by listening. Sometimes they have a speaker, who tells their story and how they got and stayed clean. Sometimes they read from "the big book" and then there is discussion. And sometimes they just discuss a topic. Then they open the floor for discussion. Everyone who speaks introduces themselves and then talks. As far as a sponsor, my recommendation is going to some meetings first and finding someone you feel you can trust and are comfortable talking to. Then you ask that person if they could be your sponsor and they will let you know either yes, or no. If the first person you ask says no, don't get discouraged, it's a huge responsibilityto take on a sponsee, because you are responsible for their recovery and for trying to help them stay clean. It's also important to build yourself a network of people you can trust, in case your sponsor is not available, someone you can call BEFORE you pick up your first drink, to help you through the cravings and urges. I'm telling you that sometimes it might not be easy, being an addict (and an alcoholic is an addict), but you didn't get there overnight and you won't be cured overnight. Take it a day at a time, sometimes a day at a time seems impossible, so you take it an hour or 15 minutes at a time. Now to the hardest part, unfortunately so many of us use to self-medicate feelings we are having that we are trying to bury. Those feelings need to be dealt with and they can get pretty ugly without the self-medicating to help numb them. Sometimes its easier to help resolve what caused us to self-medicate with the help of a therapist and it doesn't mean you are "crazy" by going to one. I know I've thrown a lot of stuff out there and it's a lot to absorb. But you know that you have admitted you have a problemand that's a huge step, now put a plan in place and stick to it. If you fall once or twice, get back up, dust yourself off and try again. You can do it, you are worth it.
