Ambian for sleep

Unread postby amdew » Tue Sep 20, 2011 8:11 pm

GREATFULY sober for two weeks. It hasn't been eazy,I didnt think it would be. The hardest part is bing tired all the time because I can't sleep. Being run down realy weakens my will. I told my Dr. about it ( I realy should have spoke to him BEFORE I stopped drinking). He gave me Ambian for sleep. It works well, but its addictive. I did tell him how much I drank and was tring to quit. Should I stop taking it? I don't get high, I just get sleepy and I sleep all night, which is a bessing. :?:

Amdew: Congrats on your 2 weeks, WOO HOO!!! As far as the Ambien goes, have you tried Melatonin or Alteril??? Melatonin and Alteril are both all natural and are actually nutritional supplements which work really well for sleep, without the possibility of addiction and you don't wake up tired the next day. They both can be purchased at like CVS or Walgreens and they are pretty inexpensive to buy. Keep adding on to your two weeks, you can keep going and you'll feel so much better.

Quit taking ambien it is addictive and you'll end up back in rehab to detox from them.

I'd listen to my doctor before an internet post. You told your doctor about your alcoholism and what you are experiencing and he prescribed something. Follow up with her and air your concern about addiction. Of course, take only as directed. And welcome to your new sober life! You're going to love it.

My doctor gave me ambien AND xanax to try and help me sleep better and reduce my anxiety while quitting drinking....and of course I ended up in rehab addicted to all three...doctors don't know everything but rehab counselors do and they told me it was a huge no no and I should never have been given the scripts from my doc in the first place. Doctors are very specialized these days so unless you are asking a doctor who is specific to addiction I wouldn't put too much stock in his advice just because he is a doctor. You can call any rehab clinic and ask them and they will tell you the same thing.

Snickers and Amdew: I agree that primary care physicians don't know everything. You definitely want and need to see a doctor who has a specialization in dealing with addictions, who would not prescribe those types of medication, except under extreme circumstances and only then while being closely monitored by them. I was self-medicating during my addiction for anxiety and after rehab when I came home, I started having these anxiety attacks that I was sure I would die from, a little melodramatic, but it was how it felt, lol. My primary care tried to help before I could get an appointment with the doctor I saw while I was in rehab, by prescribing an anti-anxiety medication, which was a good choice, but the medication didn't agree with me and I didn't sleep at all. Finally, I was prescribed something else by the doctor and while it doesn't work instantly, it was a better choice, where I did sleep and as the medication built up in my system, the anxiety issues have stopped. There are so many options out there for help with these issues, a specialist is the one to consult for help with it as opposed to a primary. I am thankful my primary has been involved in my care and has consulted with the specialist before prescribing meds for some other health issues. All doctors are not so conscientious and its easy to go from one addiction to another. Ambien says right in their commercials that it is addictive and xanax is a benze, so you know it's also addictive. Amdew, obviously you weren't totally confident in the ambien being an ideal choice, because you posted about it here, which was great, since you were listening to yourself on this one. It's funny how we know something isn't quite right and we throw it out there for another opinion or a second look. Good luck on this one, keep posting, and we'll keep helping each other here.

My honest opinion about ambien. Its powerful, and works great for normal folks. I nearly burned down my house, with a late night, ambien fueled cooking attempt. It is a narcotic based sleep aid, and in my honest opinion, its a drug, that can mess ya up pretty bad. Maybe you are better at the whole sobriety thing than I am, but I was sober, for about a month, got a prescription for ambien, and then when I ran out of that prescription, which should have lasted 30 days, (it took me like 6 or 7 days, I was abusing it) I bought some pot, so that I could sleep.

A great Plan B: Exercise, a lot, until your exhausted enough to sleep. Also, benadryl is a fabulous sleep aid, atleast until you get a natural sleep cycle again.

Completely your call, but that's my story.. I nearly killed my wife and infant son, in house fire. I thought that doc knows best, and that its not a drug, but it has the potential to be a drug. Be careful, and congrats on getting your two week chip. I am working on my second chance at life, and only have 3 days under my belt, so I apologize if the things I said were harsh! Keep up the good work :D :D :D :D !

Guest: Its really insulting when you say "works great for "normal folks". No one in the world is normal. If your here for help you should try not insulting people that you want help from buddy :!:
