Sponsor question

Hi, I'm Keith and I'm an addict. I've been in and out of recovery for 15 years. My question is: Do I absolutely need a sponsor to benefit from NA/AA. I've been to many meetings but I wasn't able to get a sponsor because I was too shy to ask. Is it pointless to go to meetings without a sponsor guiding you through the steps?
