I have never been to an AA meeting. can you just show up or do you need to call first? how do you know if you will fit with the group?

Hi and welcome.

Yes, you can just show up. There's no membership requirements or anything like that, no reservations needed. You'll see two types of meetings listed: Open and Closed. Closed means that attendance is restricted to those who have a desire to stop drinking. Open is open to anyone.

Don't worry about fitting in with the group. The meetings I have gone to have asked if there is anyone new. I would suggest raising your hand and introducing yourself. When I did, I was welcomed. I was also told to visit many groups in my area to find which ones I felt safe and comfortable at. If the first one you go to doesn't fit for you, find another. The key is to just keep going. :)
